What is the Canadian School of Wedding Officiants?
The Canadian School of Wedding Officiants (CSWO) is a professional training school for aspiring wedding officiants in Canada. We offer practical, inclusive, and comprehensive education designed to give you everything you need to build a meaningful and professional officiant practice - from legal knowledge to ceremony design to client care and business basics.
-
Who founded CSWO?
CSWO was founded by Karen Trines, a professional wedding officiant with over 15 years of experience in the Canadian wedding industry. Karen is also the founder of Grounded Ceremonies, an Ottawa-based officiant business. She brings real-world expertise — and a deep passion for this work — into everything she teaches.
-
Is CSWO right for beginners?
Yes! CSWO Foundations is our "Officiant 101." We cover everything you need to know — from legal requirements to ceremony design to professional presence. No prior experience is required.
About CIMM & Metaphysical MinistRY
-
What is CIMM?
CIMM — the Canadian International Metaphysical Ministry — is a non-denominational, inclusive ministry established in 2006. CIMM ordains metaphysical ministers who are legally authorized to solemnize marriages in recognized Canadian provinces and territories.
-
What is metaphysical spirituality?
Metaphysical spirituality is a non-dogmatic approach to spirituality that focuses on universal values like love, unity, compassion, integrity, and connection. It is flexible and inclusive, and encourages individuals to explore their own beliefs and live in alignment with their core values.
Many people already practice elements of metaphysics in everyday life, without even knowing it! This can look like mindfulness or meditation, setting intentions, using affirmations, listening to your intuition, or making choices based on empathy, respect, and integrity.
CIMM supports this open and inclusive approach. Ministers are encouraged to practice spirituality in a way that feels authentic to them while serving others with professionalism and care.
-
Who can I marry if I'm ordained through CIMM?
While some religious organizations place limitations on who their ministers may marry or require adherence to strict doctrines, CIMM is intentionally inclusive. As an ordained minister through CIMM, you can marry any two consenting adults who meet provincial legal requirements.
CSWO shares that commitment. Our training prepares you to serve all couples with professionalism, respect, and care. We believe every couple deserves to have their commitment recognized with dignity.
-
In which provinces can I legally perform weddings through CIMM?
CIMM is currently recognized for marriage solemnization in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and Yukon. If you reside in one of these provinces or territories, ordination through CIMM allows you to legally perform marriages once registered.
-
What are the ongoing requirements and fees?
Each year, ministers are required to pay annual membership dues (the fee was $300 in 2024 — subject to change), submit an Annual Minister's Report detailing the ceremonies you've performed and how you've engaged with your community or spiritual practice, and keep your contact information current with CIMM.
There is also a one-time application fee to get ordained (it was $100 in 2024, subject to change).
-
Do I need a religious background to take this course?
No prior religious background or experience is required.
Through this program, you will become an ordained minister with CIMM, whose spiritual foundation is metaphysical spirituality — a non-dogmatic, inclusive approach centered on universal values like love, unity, compassion, and integrity. CIMM welcomes people of all backgrounds, and ministers are encouraged to approach their practice in the way that feels most authentic to them.
About the CSWO Foundations Course
-
What does the CSWO Foundations course cover?
The Foundations course is divided into two sections. The first three weeks explore metaphysical spirituality and what it means to serve as a minister — the "why" behind the work. The final five weeks are dedicated to Wedding Officiant 101: the legal requirements, ceremony design, confident delivery, wedding day execution, and building your officiant business. Together, these sections give you a complete foundation.
-
Will completing the Foundations course allow me to legally perform marriage ceremonies?
Yes! CSWO Foundations is an approved training pathway for ordination with the Canadian International Metaphysical Ministry (CIMM).
Once you successfully complete the course, you become eligible to apply for ordination. After you are ordained and registered according to provincial requirements, you are legally authorized to perform marriage ceremonies in recognized provinces.
-
How long until I will be able to perform legal ceremonies?
The Foundations course runs for 8 weeks, and ordination through CIMM typically takes an additional 6–8 weeks after graduation.
Most students can expect to be legally authorized within approximately 4 months from the start of their course.
-
What does the final assessment look like?
The final assessment includes:
A written exam
Multiple choice and short-answer questions to demonstrate your understanding of legal requirements, ceremony structure, and professional standards.
A practical component
You will write a full ceremony, record yourself performing a portion of it, and submit it for feedback.
-
What happens if I don't pass the final assessment?
If you don't pass on your first attempt, you'll have an opportunity to resubmit. The goal is for every graduate to leave feeling genuinely prepared — not just to check a box.
-
Is there a course textbook or required reading?
Yes! The course includes a dedicated textbook — Wedding Officiant 101 — which is referenced throughout the program. You have the option to purchase a printed copy of this textbook or access the included PDF version online.
-
Who teaches the Foundations course?
The course is co-taught by Karen Trines and Jamie-Lynn Eckhardt, both professional officiants with Grounded Ceremonies. Karen leads the Wedding Officiant 101 modules covering the legal, practical, and business side of officiant work. Jamie-Lynn leads the A Course in Miracles modules, bringing her gift for making metaphysical concepts accessible and down-to-earth.
-
How much does the course cost?
The live Zoom cohort is $2,897 + tax, and the self-paced online version is $2,397 + tax.
-
How do we stay connected after graduation?
Graduates are invited to join a private Facebook group exclusively for CSWO alumni. It’s a space to connect, ask questions, share experiences, and continue growing as officiants.
The Live Zoom Format
-
How often does the live Zoom course run?
The live Zoom course will be offered once or twice per year. We currently have one live Zoom cohort taking place in the spring of 2026, and a fall cohort may be added based on demand.
-
Do I need to attend every class?
The course is delivered live over Zoom for eight weeks.
We strongly encourage attending all sessions to get the full benefit of discussion, feedback, and community learning. That said - we know that life happens. Every class is recorded in case you need to miss one.
To graduate, you must attend at least 6 of the 8 sessions.
-
What kind of time commitment should I expect each week?
Our live class runs for 1.5 hours, with extra time at the end for questions or discussion.
Each week also includes recommended readings and practical exercises that typically take 1–3 additional hours. They aren’t mandatory, but they are highly recommended if you want to graduate feeling confident and fully prepared!
-
What technology do I need to participate?
You'll need a reliable internet connection, a device with a camera and microphone (laptop, desktop, or tablet work best), and access to Zoom. Classes are delivered live and recorded, so you'll also want a quiet space where you can participate without interruption.
The Self-Paced Format
-
Is there a self-paced version of the course?
Yes! A self-paced, pre-recorded version of the Foundations course will launch in the summer of 2026, and will be available on our online learning platform. It covers the same curriculum as the live course, so you can work through the material on your own schedule.
-
What's the difference between the live and self-paced versions?
The curriculum is the same in both formats. The live Zoom version gives you the experience of learning alongside a cohort, with real-time discussion, live Q&A, and direct feedback from your instructors. The self-paced version gives you the flexibility to move through the material at your own pace, on your own schedule. Both pathways lead to the same graduation requirements and ordination eligibility.
Beyond the Basics
-
Are there courses available beyond the Foundations program?
Yes! We are actively developing a growing library of continuing education courses under our Beyond the Basics series — short, focused courses designed to help working officiants deepen their skills and expand their offerings.
-
Who can take Beyond the Basics courses?
Anyone! You do not need to be a CSWO graduate to enroll in a Beyond the Basics course. That said, graduates of the CSWO Foundations program receive a discounted rate on all offerings as a thank-you for being part of our community.
-
What topics will be covered in future courses?
We are always developing new courses based on what the officiant community actually needs. Topics in the works span ceremony writing, business building, social media and more.
-
Can I suggest a topic or teach a course?
Absolutely. We love hearing from the community. If there's a topic you'd love to see covered — or if you're an expert in a field relevant to officiants and are interested in collaborating — reach out at [email protected]. We are always looking for knowledgeable, passionate people to grow the series with us.
